Overview

When a portfolio company needs a reliable finance function quickly after an investor comes on board, we take on responsibility within the team. We lead, stabilize, structure and build the reporting to investor grade.

Hands-on and with no long ramp-up, even in the intense phase right after closing. With structures the team carries on independently.

Situations

Typical situations in PE portfolio companies

Interim Finance for Private Equity supports PE firms and their portfolio companies when, after the deal, a reliable finance function, investor-grade reporting or a capable accounting team is needed quickly. With operational responsibility, not outside consulting.
‍
Typical triggers: the first 100 days after closing, a vacancy in the portfolio company's finance team, reporting that needs to be raised to investor requirements, or a carve-out where finance processes are set up from scratch.
‍
Also operationally demanding: building reporting structures, stabilizing accounting and supporting system changes and migrations, in parallel with day-to-day operations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions: Interim Finance for Private Equity

How does interim finance support a portfolio company after closing?

The first 100 days are about getting the company operational quickly: Loretta Schneiders analyses the state of accounting and reporting, sets priorities and stabilises the processes that have to work immediately. In parallel, reporting is raised to the investor’s requirements. All of this happens hands-on within the portfolio company’s team, alongside day-to-day business.

What makes reporting investor-ready?

Monthly and quarterly reporting with agreed KPIs, fixed deadlines and figures reconciled with the accounts. With several entities, uniform definitions and standards are added so that investors and advisory boards receive comparable figures. What matters is that reporting comes out of clean processes and does not need manual rework every month.

How is the finance function set up independently after a carve-out?

After separation from a group, central services often fall away, such as payables, payments, closing or reporting from a shared service centre. These processes have to be built up in the new company, documented and often moved to a system of its own. Loretta Schneiders brings experience from process transfers and system changes in group structures, for example at Element Materials Technology.

Can interim finance also improve the portfolio company’s working capital?

Yes, after the investment this is often an obvious lever. Consistent receivables management, cleaned-up open items and transparent figures on outstanding amounts show how much capital is tied up and where liquidity can be released. Loretta Schneiders has been responsible for international receivables management with a nine-figure volume. More under working capital & receivables management.

Can the portfolio company’s management also be filled on an interim basis alongside finance?

Yes. Jens Schneiders takes on interim roles as CEO, COO or managing director, for example when a company has to be integrated and become operational after an acquisition or carve-out. Together, Jens and Loretta Schneiders cover general management and finance from a single source, separately or combined, depending on where the gap is.
